So this afternoon I upgraded the main site’s WordPress installation to version 2.3, which is probably better in a lot of ways I don’t understand. It’s also got some neat things like “awaiting review” post status, tags, and improved URL handling (so that you guys don’t get bad URLs anymore, hopefully). As for how good tags are, I dunno, they may just be an easier way of doing categories. Right now I have both methods in place. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Perhaps tags will eventually replace categories or I’ll become disillusioned with tags and go back to only using categories. A few days of testing will tell.

I wanna say just this on the topic of upgrading WP: It’s beautiful and painless every time. WordPress.org dudes, you are awesome.

Right now my tag archive page is kind of… betaish, not sure how I wanna arrange the tag cloud, etc. I also read up on template hierarchies and I think I wanna redo some templating for my category pages. Also, I should like to make archives/search/single post specific templates for this site (somehow, the dotqv2r theme never had them) for the sake of making the site more spiffy and professional. My guess would be that this would happen sometime this weekend.

Lastly, there’re too many small text links visible at a time on this site. I’ma try to compress the layout a bit, it looks too cluttered for me. And the small text links are really just bad, they’re hard to read, they compete with each other, and they’re small clicking targets. So yeah. Some minor layout makeovers coming this way.

Upgraded WordPress to v2.2.2 today. Everything seems functional. Especially RSS, which seemed to have problems before (I was running v2.0.1, the RSS feeds of which return 404 errors when accessed by php programs…). The forums also have something new; above the category list is now an automatically-updated list of recent main site news. Now all those lamers who only pay attention to the forums can see what’s up on dotq.org in general. :)
