(For the impatient, the link is at the top of the post. See it?)
HC: Book One, Crystals of Mana - Chapter Nine
Another on-schedule release, chapter 9 brings our combined word count to somewhere in the low 29,000s range, and we’re at 70 pages in my word processor. Next chapter will be the first to serve two digits. I’m excited :)
So this is a Mana chapter. And next chapter will be a Mana chapter. I had a poll regarding this in the forums, and Mana won out over Gem. Which is perfectly good; I needed an excuse to get on with the story.
My Notes (mild spoilers, click to view)
Summary: Julien and Mana have reached Antyliken. There they hear of Verga’s destruction, board their airship, and together ponder a variety of disturbing facts.
Here we go, the fun part!
The airship remains named Vapor, from last writing.
The captain’s name has been changed from Squeak to Guhnss. I decided that Squeak wasn’t very HC-world-ish, and, furthermore, he’s not squeaky anymore. Still very much short, though.
Mana and Julien learn of Verga City’s destruction this time. I don’t recall if they were ever explicitly informed in the previous writing; it’s quite possible that Gem mentioned it bitterly at some point. The point is that this time around, they definitely are informed at a time at which it’s pertinent information.
OMG KIEKU IS A MAGE. Yeah, if you’d read the last writing, you’d know this. No change here. I hadn’t introduced it yet because… well.. I skipped the 7-chapter intro thing? Ji’Lopan and Gem’s battle with Kieku in the hospital ten years ago in Verga might be covered in a flashback or something, but for now it has not made an appearance. So, Kieku’s status as a mage may surprise some of you who hadn’t read the previous writing, but it’s nothing new. Also, it makes sense that it not be common knowledge within the Mana Palace- the people there fear, even loathe magic, and Kieku’s cool with just being known for other aspects of his awesomeness. Finally, Mana felt no need to point this out to himself (or the reader, but that’s mainly a matter of my style…) in Chapter Two because… well, he’d grown up around Kieku, and was well aware that the man had powers.
The enchantment. A sensical development. This is different from the previous writing, in a good way, in my opinion. As one of the things I’m doing this time around is making sure that actions have reasons (as the majority of my characters are intelligent to the point of not being unintentionally psychopathic) and the enchantment on the Vapor is a perfect device. As you most likely could have induced; the demons are gone from Verga. They appeared, struck, and vanished. There is no real reason for Julien and Mana to steer clear of the ruins, but, as they have been enchanted, they believe they must. This will ultimately lead them to Terra.
This means that a) they have a legitemate reason to divert their course, and b) Kieku had a reason to enchant the Vapor. It should be clear to you from one reading of this chapter that the enchantment was not done out of kindness or a protective instinct.
What could Kieku want of Mana and Julien…?
What fate will await them in Terra…?
Oh, and I should mention something. I want to get ahead on writing this. I want to get far ahead, say, at least three chapters. This week, it felt like I was scrambling to write a chapter (there wasn’t much rush, but I definitely felt pressured) and frankly, that’s not what I think should be going down. I feel that it might eventually make this story episodic, or lacking in fluidity from one chapter to the next in a story arc, and that’s not what I want to be doing. At that point, I will be writing to a deadline, rather than creating good fiction, which is what I should be doing.
I’m not too concerned yet, but it’s possible that I might take a weekend or two off in the upcoming months in order to straighten out the story and get a few chapters ahead of the release schedule (funny idea, huh. To get ahead of a schedule by ignoring it…)
Well, enjoy. And please, comment on the piece!!

Well, I’m here at home on a school day with a pretty bad cold (but not much of a horrible sickness), having slept for fourteen hours and not recovered. No longer sleepy, I’m occupying myself by putting content up.
Over the last two weeks or so, I’ve done several drawings of Mana II, son of Lanto. I guess this is part of the process of “rebuilding” his character- solidifying, reconstructing, cementing, whatever have you. I’m not quite there yet. But at least the art’s getting better. Here are two of the aforementioned sketches that turned out the best.
Mana II - Fire Blade
Mana II - Eyes
Next order of business, I recently signed up for James’s new RPG, Second Exodus. It’s being held on the war3forums, so not everyone here will have an account there, but I think I can still advise my readers to sign up. A lot of you came over from those forums, anyway. My character, a down-on-his-luck writer named Harry Locke, is up in the RPG Character Archive.
Also today I have redone the RPG Character Archive. It no longer uses an ugly pile of links and an iframe, but rather a simple PHP program and a pretty CSS-ified list of names. With pop-up RPG titles!
Finally, I… finally… got around to completing version 0.1.6 of my single-player RPG, Verga Dissonance.

Apparently since the return to green (or even before that? From when I killed the layout and returned to blue?) comments haven’t been working on Pages. Like, you couldn’t leave comments directly on the HC Chapters. Now that’s all fixed and all.
Comment away!
