Re: Everyone's life updates

(Like the really long Russian name.) I hath been summoned! I missed typing in "cold hard words." catechumen in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It's a roundabout path to russophilia but I'll get you there. Or is it a non-Russian branch? I applied to a game design job in Denver. I'm pretty sur...

Re: hey

It's not easy to find good English-language sources, but it sounds like it's not possible to give up your Taiwanese citizenship until you've completed military service. Good luck with the school thing.

Re: hey

Definitely contact this place if you haven't already (it's the closest thing there is to a US embassy in Taiwan): The American Institute in Taipei, Taiwan 3rd Floor, Consular Section #7, Lane 134, Hsin Yi Road, Section 3 Taipei, 106 Taiwan Telephone: +(886) 2-2162-2000 or (02)2162-2000, ext. 2306 Em...

Re: Generic Book Discussion

I agree, Cloud Atlas is a collection of short stories, failing to become a novel. Based on number9dream, and accounts of his other books, this is how David Mitchell writes every one of his novels. Like most short story collections, some were good, some were bad. They would have been better without ...

Re: Generic Book Discussion

Well, I got a full time writing job, and I'm working on Flak's game design project, and Emily would like to read book 3 together after all, so it might take me an extremely long time to get through the series! Leap frogging to the top of the list (because someone recommended it to me almost a year a...

Re: Diablo III

Even Warcraft III had a lot of lore-revision. The booklet for Warcraft II had passages with Gul'dan describing orc society as 'the strongest survive, it has always been thus' and generally painting a grim picture. In Warcraft III it turns out the demons had corrupted the poor little orcs, who were n...

Re: Generic Book Discussion

My word, my piranhamoose form made it into a Saurus comic! I always love these. :D I'm not Russian but I am a Russophile, so I support this depiction. All your comments have made me excited about this series again, so I just used an old gift card to buy books 3 & 4 to reread. I reread books 1 &a...

Re: Card Hunter

I can confirm that this game is sweet! I no longer play, and PvP wasn't for me*, but the single player game is fun and lengthy, with a ton of additional endgame challenges when you finish the campaign. *Long aside: From what I hear the competitive PvP scene is exciting, it's taking off in new direct...

Re: Current Events

I don't think we'll ever have <war> again.

Probably more people shared that sentiment in 1918 than at any other point in history, and it's truly inspiring how humanity spent an entire generation only murdering the usual colonized before they outdid themselves.

Re: Generic Book Discussion

Great, glad you like them! I've only read 4 or 5 so you're about where I am (and much faster than I got through them!); I've now reread books 1 and 2 and may continue at some point, but the interweaving storylines give you incentive to focus on the series rather than picking the next one up once in ...

Re: Happy Thanksgiving

I finally made the pumpkin cheesecake that I was going to make for Thanksgiving, it turned out delicious. I'm trying to pick up some hobbies that are easier on my hands, and baking is stressful but occasionally worth it. Happy to save you a slice, Flak, when you return from your trip. Already fed a ...

Re: Gun Control Cake

Flak doesn't mean interdisciplinary; he means multi-pronged, which has only 3 syllables but also a hyphen, which adds five complexity points. The opposing argument on this issue mystifies me more than most (when articulated by someone capable of disentanglement from ridiculous rhetoric). Why can't c...

Re: Gun Control Cake

I have been recommended, but not yet read, the book "Albion's Seed", which traces 4 distinct cultural populations of England to their various settled areas in the Americas (using the term "folkways"). The author of that article & book on the "American Nations" has a...

Re: NaNoWriMo 2013

Well, nanowrimo 2012 ended with a repetitive stress injury that left me unable to use my hands for months and still causes pain... and the speech-to-text software can barely understand me... I wonder if writing on paper is doable.

Re: 9-11 Feels

I was responding to Flak: How many years do you think it will be before Americans can accept that 9/11—while maybe not an inside job—was certainly anticipated and allowed? The executive branch and the military benefited from the attack, but that does not mean they caused it. Remember that mo...

Re: Quill Quest Discussion

Only rained some evenings so far, so it hasn't bothered us. Crazy beautiful place. It's not bearfish season but visited a reindeer / elk / moose farm, rode a horse, glimpsed a wild moose. Living here would be interesting, but the dark winters would probably drive me away. (Or even the bright summers...
