Opponents of Democracy
This is a living list of people and organizations worthy of censure. Some are evil, some are simply weak of mind and heart. In all cases, extreme prejudice is recommended. Where possible, I link to articles that indicate why a particular item is on the list. These are people and organizations who have hounded, attacked, isolated, and called for the end of Wikileaks. Maybe American bourgeois democracy made a faux-pas with NYT v. United States, and maybe our system really isn't supposed to defend the likes of Wikileaks.
Contrasts typically drawn between America and China, however, emphasize how crucial freedom of the press is to any state. And open diplomacy is a prerequisite of true democracy. These people and organizations oppose the press, they oppose whistleblowing, they oppose transparency. Most of them are hypocrites. Here's the list:
People
- Hillary Clinton ("We're not sorry for spying on you, we're sorry for not hiding it well enough.")
- Joe Lieberman ("Amazon is my bitch—who's next?")
- Robert Gates (I hear he smirked.)
- Dianne Feinstein ("Freedom of speech only protects the speech I want it to protect.")
- Eric Holder ("We'll do whatever it takes to shut down Wikileaks.")
- Eric Besson
- Glenn Beck
- Tom Flanagan, Sarah Palin, Steve Padre, Bill Kristol

About Me
I am not with Wikileaks. I am not hosting Wikileaks content. I am not Anonymous. I am engaging in illegal activity—insofar as taking advantage of freedom of speech is apparently a crime these days! I'm just a dude who hates the fact that his freedom-loving home country is in the sketchy business of shutting down proponents of said home country's first and most important civil liberty.
It should be noted that I am optimistic. I agree with Assange's words: "We should always look at censorship as an economic signal that reveals the potential power of speech in that jurisdiction. The attacks against us by the US point to a great hope, speech powerful enough to break the fiscal blockade." The fact that Wikileaks is facing such inordinate difficulties is a sign that they pose a serious threat to the bourgeois ruling class and its embargoes on public awareness of its crimes and missteps. Carry on.

- The US announces on the day of Julian Assange's arrest that it is hosting World Press Freedom Day 2011. The resultant discussion page is epic.
- Timeline of some of the attacks on Wikileaks. There's more going on, of course, but it's nice to let big media collect things for us sometimes.
- Anonymous rallies to
defend'avenge' Julian Assange. Their diction is horrid but the sentiment is heartening, I suppose. (anonops.net is down, but cached) - Wikileaks is currently mirrored on almost a thousand domains. I commend each and every person brave enough to risk making themselves a target of DDoS in order to preserve free speech.
