Another Sunday, another chapter of Tundra of Heroes.

This chapter came together quickly. The first bit was written a while back, around the time I finished Chapter 17 in May, and I didn’t work on it for a while, but then I wrote the rest of the chapter speedily once I got going. It’s another A-B chapter, this time featuring Ynthon first and Grandpa Snow second.

One thing I realized as I was writing this is that I’ve been giving way more of Jung’s perspective than Ynthon’s in the Ynthon parts. I don’t know if that’s a problem. I don’t really have a commitment to one or the other, I’m just writing what feels right at the time. There. I’m disorganized. You have it in writing (punny lolololol).

Another thing I realized is that Jyunor is turning into a fairly significant character, and that I’m going to need to develop him more. Oh, throwaway characters.

Anyway… enjoy the chapter and, as always, please comment!

Today is a good day. I have completed Tundra of Heroes Chapters 17 and 18, and am posting writings on Dreams of the Quill again.

This chapter was a tough one to write. It brutalized me, but I brutalized it right back, I think.

I wanted to do something weird, I wanted to bring Jeuni’s story back in somehow. What better way than to have one of the actors in Jeuni’s story who knows the past—the giant, the beastman, Aranji Herald of Harnecia—talk about the past? Through him, we learn more of the changes the world has gone through since the founding of Byhr.

And then Tomora Ynthon, political animal that he was already at the tender age of twelve, gives us the same treatment, discussing the founding of Byhr with his aide in the context of Harnecia’s fall from a golden age of academia (Grandpa Snow).

I’m very pleased with how this chapter turned out, but I’m afraid it might be slightly confusing, especially for those of you who haven’t read the first part and don’t know anything about Jeuni Huros and his trip to the South. Um… if you haven’t read the first part, there’s not much I can do for you. I could suggest you read it, but I’ll have to warn you it’s not as well written as the current stuff.

For those of you who HAVE read the first part, the “Side B” of this chapter takes place during Chapter 8, right after the party finds the obelisk.

Apologies for the heavy emotional reminiscing on Grandpa Snow’s part in “Side A.”

Hopefully, this chapter is as fun for you to read as it was for me to write.

This chapter returns to the Side A/Side B presentation, focusing first on Grandpa Snow and then on Commander Ynthon.

Man, release notes are so hard to write. Hmm… process. I wrote Side B first, because I really wanted to continue from last chapter’s scene. I presented SIde A first because I was too lazy to flip the break image. I don’t think that this matters too too much because the only connection the two stories have is that I’m writing them at the same time. Who knows how they’d be presented in a published (omg!) book.

I’m pretty sure we might get to some more physical conflict in the nest installment of Ynthon’s story… maybe some cool fights or something. Of course there’ve been bits of conflict all along, just. Jeuni’s story got off to a start with an explosive battle, and we have yet to see anything like that this time around.

Well, I’m done rambling for now. It’s late, and I’ve got some other stuff to tend to before I sleep.

Enjoy, and please leave any feedback you might have!

This one’s an Ynthon-only chapter. No Grandpa Snow here. No, next chapter won’t be Intra-only. I made this chapter be all about Ynthon because I felt his plot wasn’t moving along fast enough. I also felt that there wasn’t enough violence in it, but I clearly didn’t try too hard to rectify that.

It’s still a ways until our first fight, unless I change the plot.

Anyway. One thing this chapter has a lot of that I didn’t like doing too much is dialogue between Ynthon’s men. Let’s be frank: they’re throwaway extras. But that doesn’t mean that their dialogue can be total crap.

I still feel like I might be able to do the scene in question better, so any thoughts on the topic are appreciated. (Most of my time working on this chapter was spent on it.)

We meet some more characters this chapter… another commander, some of Ynthon’s men. Like I said, throwaway extras. Except for one, who should set off flags the moment you see his name. Since uh, it’s a name you’ll have seen before, if you read Jeuni’s story.

Aaaand rapidly approaching spoiler territory, so I’ll stop now.

Enjoy and, as always, please comment!

Apologies for the long gap between chapters. I’ve spent a lot of time in the last month writing stuff that will likely never show its face on this website. ANYWAY. No, I didn’t forget about this :)

We’re back with more Tomora Ynthon, but mostly with more Intra Noi. This chapter does more for Intra’s character than Tomora’s, I think, though it advances the two stories approximately the same amount.

Brief, non-spoiler summary: see the “ironic” chapter title.

Umm… I don’t know what else to say here, so maybe I’ll ramble a bit about the story. I’m hoping to have some more action (*cough*in other words, some action*cough*) soon; I’m thinking of devoting an entire chapter to Tomora’s story soon (maybe next chapter). Section after section of conversation isn’t too good for pacing… actually, it might be. I just might be writing a totally different story from Jeuni’s right now (Jeuni’s story is punctuated by its violence).

Yeeeah I dunno. And I’m totally too tired to be writing these notes right now (9:30 PM on the 13th). And I’m not gonna feel like doing it in the morning. So I’ll just give up now. Go read the chapter.

Welcome back to Tundra of Heroes. Here’s another chapter in the stories of Intra Noi and Tomora Ynthon. “Hey Flak,” you might ask, “the story’s developing so slowly!” Well, it took four chapters for Jeuni’s story to really get going, and here we’re progressing at half speed (since each chapter is split between two stories). Yeah, things are kind of slow. But there’s still a lot going on ;)

I’d love to get more feedback (pickings were slim last chapter, unfortunately). It’d really help me with this.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say for now. Future chapters may have more accompanying notes. Once things get going.

If you have not read any Tundra of Heroes before, check this post out anyway. This new writing stands on its own, though it benefits from a reading of previous material. Be sure to read the release notes before the chapter, even if you’re familiar with Tundra of Heroes! Happy Halloween!

To those who’re unfamiliar with Tundra of Heroes: welcome. You might be Night Switch readers—this is very different from Night Switch. It’s “serious business.” Installments will be longer and less frequent. There will be fewer if any anime references and internet culture jokes. Though this is less “fun” than Night Switch, I like to think it’s still entertainment, so I would encourage you to read it. As already mentioned, this new content (a new chapter of Tundra of Heroes) benefits from a reading of previous material (the prologue, chapters one through ten, and what was formerly the “epilogue”). However, it doesn’t depend on it. There are references to things mentioned previously, but they are not integral.

If you haven’t read Tundra of Heroes before, you should! But if you don’t have time to read eleven chapters now, just go with this for now.

To those who are familiar with ToH: welcome back. Those of you who voiced opinions about the story said stuff along the lines of “I hope there’s more.” Well, now you get your more, after nine and a half months or so. I’m treating the epilogue as a “Chapter 11″ for numbering purposes. This Chapter 12, though, is not a continuation of Jeuni’s story—it’s the beginning of two other stories set in the same world, which ultimately will tie in with Jeuni’s story. Here’s the confusing part: they both take place before Jeuni’s story, and they take place at different times. Have fun choking on the back-and-forth and confusion ;)

To everyone reading this post: thank you for being here. I’m trying something I have not tried before (Night Switch switches perspectives, but so far all action has been chronologically linear). Before you read this, I will give you a little cheat-sheet:

1. chapters 1-10 will henceforth be referred to as “Jeuni’s story”
2. the first half of this chapter takes place approximately 70 years before Jeuni’s story
3. the second half of this chapter takes place just about 27 years before Jeuni’s story

That’s all I’m offering for now; the setting and state of the world in the two different stories should be revealed over time as you read more. Also, I intend to get my act together and offer supplementary material alongside the text—maps, art, etc. There won’t be anything at first, but there will be more than just text. I want to leverage more media in order to present the connections between the three different stories.

Enjoy, and please comment—I’m going to need a lot of feedback as I get back into writing this more “serious” stuff.

Aaaaaand the word count is in: 37,932. That’s the entirety of Tundra of Heroes as it stands right now. Yes, that number will change. As I’ve stressed, I wanted to “finish” the story so that I could edit it a lot and make it strong. So this epilogue marks the end of a “draft” as it were. From here, I intend to go through every chapter individually and the story as a whole, looking for words to cut, words to add, dialogue to touch up, expositions to rearrange to better shape the story, etc.

I should like help from any readers of ToH, though I can’t expect much. You’re a pretty non-vocal group. In the meantime, I’ll be taking a short break from ToH to distance myself from the text. Then I can take a refreshed look at it in a while.

Oh! And! Now that you’ve read the whole story you can all go review ToH on Pages Unbound or on Muse’s Success.

Here’s the link to .rtf downloads for you monitor haters: Tundra of Heroes downloads
