9/3/09 E98 Exercise #1 – Nothing To YouCategories: ShortsTags: berkeley • english 98 • mini • school Comments: 5 |
Our first writing exercise homework. The prompt was to write a scene (300-500 words… where did I grow accustomed to those constraints…?) in which one person wants something that the other doesn’t want to give. We were told to focus more on the conflict and less on the object of the conflict, but that it was up to us whether or not to reveal it at the end. I’m pleased with what I have so far, though I have a while to finalize my submission.

The “logical continuation” of the trope combination exercise I did on Monday. By which I mean, not very logical. Thanks to ghostlightning for his comment on the Monday post, which inspired me to keep going. Hopefully he doesn’t mind that I cannibalized his comment … >_>

Had the first session of my Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short Story Workshop course today. One of the things we did after a lengthy ice-breaker was this: we each wrote down a few ‘features’ we associate with Sci-Fi and a few we associate with Fantasy. Then our lists were compiled, refined, and each of us was assigned one thing from column A and one from column B. Then we were given ten minutes to freewrite.
Here’s mine.

Lots of fiction this semester.
8/28/09 Sather TowerCategories: ShortsTags: berkeley • mini Comments: 2 |
Sather Tower is an ivory campanile, surrounded by grass as lush as the minds enshrined within the institute.
Of course, the grass isn’t always green – in the summer, in the fall, when the sun burns hot through the deteriorating atmosphere, the sprinklers run only so often and the grass browns. We’re too sensible to waste that much water, of course. Lush minds are evergreen.
