Results of Writing Challenge #1

Last week I ran the first ever Dreams of the Quill Writing Challenge. Anyone who was interested had only to write a short story and submit it. All entries were to be posted here on the main site and supplemented by a single illustration thrown together by yours truly. This was largely an attempt at beefing up DotQ’s content and forcing myself to draw. What emerged was that a lot of people were eager to write.

We got seven entries:
- The Black Lake’s Womb by 21stcenturydigitalboy
- Living the Dream by Alar
- Operator 35571 by kimaguresan
- Interrogation by Pato
- Patterns #8&9 by Flak
- photographer by GheoFabulousDuk
- The Welcome Party by spambot.

Reflecting on the process… it was intense for me. Signing up to do potentially infinite artwork in the span of a single week was pretty crazy. I expect a handful of entries at ‘best,’ and so felt confident in my promise, but by the time the seventh story was submitted I began worrying. So if I were to run this again, I might have to limit my enthusiasm somehow. I’m not yet sure how.

A lot of people of whom I did not expect entries expressed interest in the challenge. That was enlightening, too. If I do this again I’ll be sure to get those people on board sooner. One or two people expressed their regret over letting this fly under their radars.

And finally, the challenge itself seems to be an occasion that would push people who don’t normally write to get their feet wet in text. Being me, I think that’s awesome! That’s incentive enough in itself for me to consider doing this again.

As always, I see Dreams of the Quill as a community.

And this first-ever Writing Challenge is my first active step in cementing that. Huge thanks to everyone who submitted stories! Read each other’s entries, comment, give feedback, and so on. I expect that this can be built upon. Writing can improve, writers can improve. Let’s keep it up, gang!

Oh, and please take a second to fill out this brief survey:

Which of the following would you say about the first DotQ Writing Challenge?
