2/7/08 A Short Post
By Black Shard | Comments: 10I think I’m going to kill something.
I haven’t figured out how to do anything in the forums, which is irritating in and of itself, but more irksome is the fact that I haven’t the faintest idea what I could possibly be doing differently to get better results.
Geh.

You think you’re going to kill something because for a week you never tried to ask anyone about how to “do anything on the forums?”
Sorry, but that’s seriously comical. Why don’t you like, tell me what error you get when you click on the forums link from the header of the main site. You know, that’d be a good place to start.

I don’t think you are as sorry as you say you are, Flak.

That is to say, at all? Wrong.
I’m sorry for finding humor in someone’s suffering. I’m sorry because it is undoubtedly “my fault” that Shard has encountered problems. How sorry? Sorry. Not incredibly so, but so. I do think it’s incredibly silly that he never tried to contact us/me before he got this upset about it, but I’m still sorry.

The actual issues are two-fold. Firstly, when using Internet Explorer, though not when using Firefox, the forum section of the site (Though not the main section) will often, but not always, give me a ‘404 page not found’ error. Secondly, I have been unable to find a way to log in for forum purposes. All the buttons that say ‘log in’, both for the main site and the forums, log me into the main site and then the forums refuse to acknowledge that I exist. Rather than ‘post reply’, I see ‘you must be logged in to post in this thread’. Even the thing that tells you who is online says nothing.
And actually, I spent a week being mildly annoyed but largely unconcerned with my inability to access the forums, and simply waited it out. According to yourself, that was all that was needed. It was only when I finally took two hours to work at it that I acquired that level of frustration.
And it’s important to keep in mind that I am but one character trait short of being a serial killer. These statements are not in jest, though I am unlikely to act upon them.

Also, the forums themselves arrange themselves horrendously in Internet Explorer. Everything that is supposed to be in the same area as the avatar, including that image, is instead shoved over actual post text.

>>Firstly, when using Internet Explorer, though not when using Firefox, the forum section of the site (Though not the main section) will often, but not always, give me a "404 page not found" error.
Other people have experienced this, including TNH and Alar. The 404 problem is in part being caused by a hack I’m using, and it’s terrible and I wish I knew how to fix it, but every single browser aside from Internet Explorer loads the forums without the 404 error. As I don’t have access to Internet Explorer for testing purposes, and as you all have access to other web browsers for browsing purposes, and as Internet Explorer simply sucks in myriad other ways, the solution is not only easy but also clear: don’t use Internet Explorer.
>>Secondly, I have been unable to find a way to log in for forum purposes.
Did you see the post explaining the changes, on the forums? You had both a main site and a forum account before; now you only have one. The reason that all login links bring you through the main site login form is that all forum accounts ARE main site accounts. If you login for the main site, you’re logging in for the forums. That was one of the major things about the change—one account.
Have you tried going to a forum page—any forum page—and clicking “Log in” from the header/sidebar, and entering your main site account name and password? It should redirect you to the forum page you were viewing, and you should be logged in.

The forums arranging themselves AT ALL in Internet Explorer sounds like a step up to me, given that TNH got 404 Errors EVERY TIME he tried loading them. As for the particular problem you’re describing, I can assure you that the CSS used to style the forum thread pages is a-okay, and that this is another example of Internet Explorer being sucky.
Hopefully you can log in on the forums. If you’re unable to do so, I guess I’ll have to look into the database again… sigh.

I’ve tried logging in through every ‘log in’ link I can find, and none of them cause the forums to acknowledge my existence as a forumite. This is true regardless of whether I use IE or Firefox.

Alright, I’m going to change your password so that I can try logging in as you and attempt to find out whatever is wrong. I’ll contact you more privately (email ok?) in a while.

I begin to suspect that it is either my ID or my name-with-a-space that is causing the error. Once again, I find myself unable to access forum functions.

I was afraid of that, though it makes absolutely no sense to me that that of all things would be what’s breaking your account. Anyway, for now, try logging in with your DarkTime password and the login “BlackShard”. If that doesn’t work for the forums, I’ll just change ya back to DarkTime (which worked, yes?).
